Sydney Uni Baseball Club is finals bound!
It’s finals baseball time!
The regular season is over and that means it’s finals baseball time! And in a first, Sydney Uni Baseball Club (SUBC) has five (5) teams going into the finals this season. This is an unprecedented result and can be attributed to the dedication and hard work put in at training each week by all players and coaching staff. An awesome achievement by all.
Sydney Winter Baseball League (SWBL)
1st Grade have equalled the top of the table, losing the minor premiership on a head to head count. This means we play our semi final on Sunday August 16th at 1pm against Quakers Hill at Petersham Oval. 1st Grade will look to manufacture early and capitalise late while sticking with our arsenal of pitchers that is the most well rounded in the competition. A semi final win will see our 1st grade Cynics at the big dance on Sunday August 23rd at Petersham Oval - 1pm start.
2nd Grade had a late run for the finals for the ages. Beating the top 2 teams in the last few rounds to stay in the hunt for a finals spot. Unfortunately other results went against us with Greenway winning their round 14 game and ending 2nd Grades chances of a finals spot. A consolation prize was beating Greenway in the final regular season round last weekend to finish off the season. A gallant effort by the guys to do everything they could in their control and to give themselves a chance of a finals spot.
3rd Grade ended the regular season on top of the ladder to cement the minor premiership. With a pitching powerhouse and never say die attitude to confirm their dominance all season. Finishing first gave them a ticket straight into the Grand Final on Saturday August 22nd at 1pm at Petersham Oval. They will play the winner of Petersham (2) vs Castle Hill (3) on Saturday 15th August.
Pacific Coast Baseball League (PCBL)
C1 team finished 3rd for the season claiming a spot in the finals after winning a must win game in the final round. Having lost the first 5 games at the beginning of the season to then see them go on a 5 game winning streak to get them back into contention. Finishing the regular season with 8 wins and 6 losses to scrape it into the finals. They play Baulkham Hills (2nd) at Northmead Reserve on Saturday 15th August at 2.45pm for a spot in the Grand Final on Saturday 22nd.
C2 team on the other hand have been the unbeatables all season. Ending the regular season with 12 wins and 2 losses to see them also finish top of the ladder to cement the minor premiership. With Matt Jones leading the charge on the mound and hungry to avenge last years Grand Final loss and go one better this year. Finishing first booked them a spot straight into the Grand Final on Saturday 22nd August at 12.30pm where they will play the winner of the Concord (2) vs Baulkham Hills (3) game on Saturday 15th August.
F2 team this season showed they were a force to be reckoned with finishing in 3rd spot. This is a brilliant result given their first foray playing baseball in PCBL last year. For many this was either their first or second year playing baseball. It is also a predominantly student heavy team which led to conflicting study and lesson schedules with game days. Yes lessons on Saturdays now! So to make the finals this season is an awesome achievement. They will play Concord on Saturday 15th August at Magdala Park for a Grand Final spot on Saturday 22nd August.
