2026 Hume Intervarsity Cup Report

The Sydney University Baseball Club participated in the 2026 Hume Intervarsity Cup, a recognised UniSport intervarsity tournament held at Jubilee Park in Wagga Wagga over the Easter weekend on 4 and 5 April. The University of Sydney was represented by a squad of 12 student-athletes competing against RMIT University, the University of Melbourne, and Monash University.

Sydney delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, winning all four games and claiming the championship. The team demonstrated strong hitting, dominant pitching, resilience, and excellent team spirit across the weekend.

Game 1: vs RMIT University

Score: Sydney 10 – RMIT 2

Sydney began the tournament with a convincing 10–2 victory over RMIT University. Louis Kawesch and Kiran Myutel-Mansur led the offence with three RBIs each, helping Sydney establish control of the game.

Angus Wyles delivered an excellent performance on the mound, pitching four innings while allowing only two hits and two earned runs. He also recorded seven strikeouts, restricting RMIT’s offence and helping Sydney secure a strong opening win.

Game 2: vs University of Melbourne

Score: Sydney 17 – Melbourne 6

Sydney continued its strong form with a dominant 17–6 victory over the University of Melbourne. Kiran Myutel-Mansur produced a perfect three-for-three performance at the plate, while Jean Ahn drove in three runs. Lucas Kim and Ant Le also made important offensive contributions, recording two RBIs each.

Jean Ahn pitched two innings and recorded five strikeouts, while Harry Novak provided a strong relief appearance. Novak pitched one scoreless inning, allowing no earned runs and striking out one batter.

Game 3: vs Monash University

Score: Sydney 18 – Monash 11

Sydney showed exceptional resilience in its third game against Monash University. After falling behind by seven runs, the team produced an impressive comeback to win 18–11. Sydney responded with a seven-run inning and continued to build momentum throughout the remainder of the game.

Hisato Adachi recorded two hits and one RBI, while Toshihiko Iwai-Wong also contributed two hits. Lucas Kim had an excellent offensive performance with two hits and three RBIs, while Nate Dawson added another RBI.

Sydney’s relief pitchers played an important role in completing the comeback. Lucas Kim pitched one scoreless inning and struck out three batters, while Hisato Adachi recorded four strikeouts across 1⅓ scoreless innings. The game was fittingly completed by Kiran Myutel-Mansur, who recorded the first strikeout of his baseball career to secure the final out.

Championship Game: vs Monash University

Score: Sydney 11 – Monash 1

Sydney faced Monash University again in the championship game and produced its most complete performance of the tournament, securing an emphatic 11–1 victory.

Rather than relying on one large inning, Sydney consistently scored runs throughout the game and maintained control from beginning to end. Hisato Adachi produced a crucial RBI double, while Kiran Myutel-Mansur, Nate Dawson, and Lucas Kim each delivered timely hits to drive in runs. Harry Novak added a decisive hit that brought home two runners and helped seal the championship victory.

Sydney’s pitching staff was dominant throughout the final. Angus Wyles continued his excellent tournament by pitching 1⅓ scoreless innings and recording one strikeout. Harry Novak then delivered an outstanding relief appearance, striking out six batters over 2⅔ innings while allowing only one earned run. Hisato Adachi closed the game in dominant fashion, striking out all three batters he faced.

The victory was particularly meaningful after Sydney had lost to Monash in the final of the previous intervarsity tournament. Returning to the championship game against the same opponent and securing a convincing win demonstrated the team’s improvement, determination, and ability to perform under pressure.

The 2026 Hume Intervarsity Cup was an extremely successful tournament for the Sydney University Baseball Club. Sydney completed the weekend undefeated, winning all four games and finishing as tournament champions.

The tournament was also a valuable opportunity for student-athletes to represent the University of Sydney and compete against other university baseball programs. The squad displayed excellent team spirit throughout the weekend, with contributions coming from across the entire team.

Following the success of both the Melbourne Intervarsity Tournament and the Hume Intervarsity Cup, the club looks forward to continuing to develop university baseball and creating further opportunities to compete against a wider range of universities in future intervarsity tournaments.
