SUBC 2016 Half-Season Report

The 112th year of Sydney Uni Baseball Club has thus far been competitive on the field with all 4 grades still in the hunt for the postseason. We've already claimed silverware by retaining the Uni Cup, and our off-field activity has been reinvigorated by a new sponsor near Petersham Oval.

The Past vs Present game will make a long overdue return this year. Please read below for details.

1st Grade

2 Wins, 5 Losses. Currently placed 6th.
Boasting the strongest hitting line-up and the deepest pitching rotation in recent memory, 1st Grade began the season confident as a championship contender; with back-to-back wins out of the gate. Injuries, work commitments, Mother Nature and an agonising walk-off loss in extra innings have followed, with 1st Grade likely requiring 5 wins from their last 6 to make the playoffs. Now full-strength again, this is achievable in a very wide open field.

2nd Grade

3 Wins, 2 Losses, 1 Draw. Currently placed 3rd.
With a 19 year age gap in the infield, 2nd Grade truly are a blend of youth and experience. This has paid dividends, with Gen Z showing they belong, Gen Y playing like veterans and the older blokes cheating Father Time. 2nd Grade are in the playoff mix, and should be involved come August.

3rd Grade

5 Wins, 1 Loss, 1 Draw. Currently placed 2nd.
Stacked with multiple former 1st Graders, club veterans and new talent, 3rd Grade are only a handful of plays away from being undefeated. The immediate goal is a top 2 finish to ensure two bites of the cherry, and we are optimistic that 3rd Grade will go one better than their Grand Final appearance last season.

Pacific Coast

3 Wins, 1 Loss, 1 Draw. Currently placed 1st.
Pac Coast have posted a tremendous start, sitting atop of the ladder. In previous years we've fielded a large squad of varying experience across two teams, which had made it difficult to achieve consistency. This season, it's been distilled down to a single, quality baseball team, which has worked hard to achieve its positive results and championship aspirations.

New Pub Sponsor: The West Village, Petersham

We have a new second home, The West Village on Terminus St in Petersham. For those unfamiliar with the name, it’s the revamped White Cockatoo.

The move was made so that we’d have a social venue closer to Petersham Oval. Cynics can now be found there after every home game, enjoying $12 jugs of Boag’s, with Students receiving 20% off main meals.

Management and Staff have taken excellent care of us, both financially and through the great food, drinks and service. You can also show your support by visiting their Facebook page and hitting the “Like” button.

Ladies’ Day: 28th May 2016

Autumn had produced 12 consecutive weekend of glorious sunshine, but conspired against us on its final Saturday. However Ladies' Day still proved a triumph, despite an extended rain delay.

$895 was raised for our nominated charity Youth Off The Streets; Ladies were treated to free manicures, Pimms and sparkling wine; and the gourmet options of Pulled Pork, Veggie, and Beef Burgers kept the BBQ humming all day.

SUBC thanks The West Village, The Pig & Pastry, Rothvale Vineyard and Network TEN for their support and contributions. My personal thanks to our Executive Committee, Grounds Crew and Players for their dedication in making the day a success.

Past vs Present: 9th July 2016

Cynics Alumni are invited to Petersham Oval from 9am-12pm on July 9th to take on our current squad; from memory the Past gave the Present a clinic in the last meeting.

Following the game, we will head to The West Village for lunch, drinks and trading of inter-varsity war stories.

More information will follow in the coming weeks, so please forward this email, or pass on contact details for Cynics that may have dropped off our distribution list.

Oval No.2 Grandstand: Indoor Nets

The pristine No.2 Grandstand has been unveiled, reshaping the Oval into a Rectangle. Unfortunately this new configuration precludes any chance of returning to the Cynicdome; but there is a silver lining.

The Grandstand houses a peerless indoor hitting facility, where we now conduct our weekly training sessions. With retractable netting for three tunnels and brilliant lighting, it is a major upgrade on soggy and dim nights on the Square. (Our current players are probably spoilt; if you learnt to field a ball on the Square, you could field one anywhere!)
